Everything in my world felt like noise.
Every day and every experience just seemed to be adding layers of noise. They were adding complexity to the already complex. Whether it is thoughts about money, relationships, my job, my purpose and even spirituality, it all still felt like noise distracting me from me real self. My problems were all layers, and even the solutions to those problems became a layer on top of that.
Peace was a layer.
Fulfillment was a layer.
Freedom was a layer.
Love was a layer.
Maybe not experientially, but as long as I only knew them conceptually they were layers. I was overflowing with content as I got more and more lost in this ever increasing pile of things. I was hidden beneath it all and the only way to access it was to become completely silent. And to listen. But actually, even the idea of listening became another layer. I was thus forced to surrender and let go. But I could only think about surrender conceptually and it became another ‘thing’ to let go of. Eventually I fell back in my chair and just stopped. Suddenly and mercifully.
My mind can not narrate this spiritual journey. I must go alone.
Leading up to this moment I had been desperately searching for my purpose. Digging deep into my past. Looking at all of the things that I love doing, things that I hate doing, things that seem to come naturally, and things I have to work to make happen. I have read Start With Why, The Secret, A New Earth, & Steve Jobs’ Biography to name a few. These are all books that deal with purpose to some extent. And after all of that, and hours of contemplation, I came to one stark realization:
Life has no purpose. We are simply here because we are here.
This is not a depressing revelation. It is only the ego that must have a reason for being. Purpose, as grand and wonderful as it seems is just another limitation. As is everything that you use to try and define yourself. My only freedom is to become purposeless.
I am here. That is all I know. That is all that matters.
The quote in the title starts at 37 minutes and 40 seconds. The embedded video is not starting at the right spot. Though the whole video is quite good as well.
My mind was blown this morning when I found this article after googling “Why does time slow down at the speed of light?”
But it turns out that time doesn’t slow down at the speed of light, it doesn’t exist at all! The article goes on to say that “Everything in the Universe travels at light speed. Always.” Only it is our combined speed through both space and time that is considered. The faster you travel through space, the slower you travel through time.
I found another article on the topic of light speed that really got my mind melting. It’s a blog post on the site ‘Ask A Mathematician‘ Speaking about relativity it states the following:
“Whenever there’s a “time effect” there’s a “distance effect” as well, and in this case we find that infinite time dilation (no time for photons) goes hand in hand with infinite length contraction (there’s no distance to the destination).”
Since time and distance go hand in hand not only does the photon not experience time, it does not experience distance either!
From the perspective of the photon it is everywhere in the universe at the same time!
If a photon does not experience time nor distance then they also could not have had a beginning. Photon’s must have always existed. And without a beginning, there will be no end. At least from the photon’s point of view. We may well see a big crunch (not literally of course), and then a subsequent big bang. But this can mean nothing to the eternal photon.
What exactly does it mean to not experience time? Does it mean to be frozen at a particular point in time? We have all heard the story of the man who left earth travelling near the speed of light for 3 months only to return and everyone is 50 years older. This seems to hint that time is getting compressed.
However, in the distance analogy above I inferred that to not experience distance means that the photon is everywhere. So if the photon does not experience time, is it not in every time rather than a single, infinitely compressed point?
In spirituality we often speak of the light of consciousness. It is that part of your true self that doesn’t experience time, and doesn’t experience distance, but it is the pure witness to both.
Is there a link between this light of consciousness and this eternal photon light described above or is this analogy meant purely metaphorically?
Perhaps they are mirrors of each other. As photon light illuminates the universe it is reflected as a form through perception within my consciousness. But does it do more than that?
To perceive an object, or form, the light first enters our eyes, shapes our minds, and then creates an image.
Think about it for a moment. This series of eternal photons that exist everywhere, and at every time, has penetrated our bodies and shaped our perception of absolutely everything!!!
This certainly hints at much bigger things about light than just physical properties. When Eckhart Tolle underwent his transformation one of his first realizations was that there was much more to light than we could ever imagine.
I am drawn to think that light may be the ultimate source of our true selves, of infinite wisdom, and of peace and joy. Jesus said “I am the light of the world”. And if he was, then we all must be.
This is an incredibly valuable piece of advice for learning how to be with someone who suffers. It is a pathway to healing for both the sufferer and the listener.
I hold no stake in this pursuit
Of minded things and titles
Worn paths come as warnings
Hands are for writing, not recitals
If I doubt my truth, my truth is doubt
To deny makes room for madness
A shepherd of all feelings felt
In peace there must be anguish
I have a theory that in order to be at peace with yourself you must make peace with the entire human experience. This includes the whole spectrum. Every good samaritan and corrupt leader, every violent act and healing hand, every unwanted thought and each brilliant idea, a miraculous birth or a painful death. You must make peace with everything, no matter how horrific, because such potential exists within each of us.
We are subject to corruption, superficiality, hatred, anger just because we belong to the human race. It is the risk of being alive. But fortunately we are also capable of amazing acts of love, compassion, caring, and sacrifice. It is Love vs Hate. That the scales of humanity tilt one way or the other is the primary determining factor in our destiny.
I really find the analogy of the scale useful as it helps demonstrate one of my key beliefs. Any attention directed towards hate, whether you are directly supporting a hateful idea or you are opposing a hateful idea (i.e. hating the hate) you are tilting the scales in the direction of hatred. I try to apply this idea when listening to the news and I hear a story relating to this eternal struggle. It’s not always easy.
For instance, with the winter Olympics in Sochi approaching the Russian law that makes homosexuality a crime is getting a lot of airtime. It is a despicable law based entirely on unsubstantiated fear and of course, hatred. Many discussions on this topic center around what is the best way to protest this law. I worry that while intense resistance of this ridiculous law is warranted, it will only slow the pace of change. Eckhart Tolle stated it best when he said “Whatever you fight you strengthen, and whatever you resist, persists.”. I think strong opposition to an idea, no matter how warranted, often causes the opposed to dig their heels in.
So how could you tilt the scales from such hatred towards love? What about a gay couple just being a loving gay couple. Regardless of being in the spotlight or not. If you are in a major televised event and you win, or come second, or lose, simply showing the loving support that is commonplace in many relationships would help lay the foundation for change. I realize this is not the accepted approach in our current world and people often want to make a big splash. But often when you make a big splash it’s because you hit a big wall. Of course safety is always a major concern and I have no idea how Russian authorities plan to react to gay athletes interacting like normal couples. This is where your country’s support would be vital.
This approach also requires a certain amount of sympathy towards the offenders. That we are all equal forms of life trying to navigate our way as members of humanity in all of it’s flaws. It requires the recognition that simply by being human we are also capable of such hatred if only our environment and genetics were changed slightly. But most importantly it is the knowledge that the power of love exists in all of us. Keep adding more to the scales and eventually, once a certain threshold is reached, the scales will permanently tilt towards it.
